POSITION DESCRIPTION: The Spray Technician is a full-time non- exempt employee of The Annenberg Foundation Trust at Sunnylands and reports to the Director of Agronomy and Landscape and works in partnership with other Trust employees. Under the Directors supervision, this position directs and is responsible for mixing, loading and applying a wide variety of chemicals and fertilizers to the ground of the Annenberg Estate and Visitor Center. This position may assist in training of staff and implementing agronomic maintenance and development programs. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Treat specific insect, weed, turf disease and nutritional deficiencies by application of appropriate product. Maintain power spray equipment in a safe, clean and mechanically sound condition at all times. See that all field equipment complies with federal, state and local regulations. Complete spray requests as per schedule. Maintain accurate records of chemical usage according to all applicable federal, state and local laws, rules and regulations. Use good judgment in the application of chemicals (exposure to the public, weather conditions and other environmental considerations). Provide and maintain safe physical conditions for employees assigned to spray duties, per OSHA standards. Position operates all motorized equipment and trucks used on the golf course and grounds. Install and assist in golf course and grounds construction, maintenance and irrigations systems. Able to operate riding mowers (triplex, fairway units and rough units), tractors with PTO implements, sweepers, skip loader, telehandler, boom truck, wood chipper and hydroseeder. Spray pesticide and herbicide chemicals upon trees and shrubs while utilizing a boom truck. Application of chemicals utilizing a backpack sprayer, powered air blower and handheld spray-gun. Operate small equipment such as weed eaters, blowers, push mowers and edgers. Responsible for assisting with all other general golf and grounds maintenance. Ability to operate small trimming saws, pruning shrubs, installation of sod and flowers. Manicure bunkers and clean lakes as required. Inform the Director of Agronomy and Landscape of parts, supplies or equipment needed. Follow all company and safety and security policies and procedures; report defective equipment, accidents, injuries, & unsafe work conditions to manager; complete safety training and certifications. Performs manual labor as needed. Places safety as a top priority. Maintains a clean service area and maintenance building. Must be able to respond to a call out after hours and work weekends and holidays. Consistent, regular and reliable attendance is required. SKILLS NEEDED: Knowledge of safe practices in mixing, application and disposal of pesticides and herbicides. Knowledge of spray equipment calibration. Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions. Knowledge of basic preventative maintenance on assigned equipment. Skill in utilizing a variety of chemicals, pesticides and herbicides. Skill in following oral and written instructions. Skill in operating and working around moving equipment. Skill in following safety practices and recognizing hazards. Skill in maintaining required records of chemicals applied and frequency. Ability to work in a variety of weather conditions, while repairing equipment. Excellent time management, organization and prioritization skills.QUALIFICATIONS:The Spray Technician will have the following experience: High School education or GED and 2 years of related equivalent experience of related golf course maintenance required Possession of a valid CA drivers license. Ability to operate all equipment used for golf course and grounds management. Requires a complete knowledge of chemical application equipment Requires a knowledge in the safe mechanical operation calibration of the following types of equipment: Mechanically pressurized spray equipment, hand-operated spray equipment, hand operated rotary and drop spreaders, utility tractors Must have completed training requirements as demanded by the state and federal governments, including those required by the OSHA Hazard Communications StandardComplete knowledge of chemical application equipment PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. S/he must have Physical ability to perform life saving techniques, CPR and First Aid and the ability to utilize emergency equipment. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to stand, walk, read, hear, talk, balance, climb, use hands, use fingers, reach, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, push or pull. The employee may be required to move or lift objects weighing up to 30 pounds. Specific vision abilities required for this position include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, color vision and the ability to adjust focus. While performing duties in this position, the employee will work outdoors and may be exposed to wet and/or hot conditions, moving mechanical parts, toxic or caustic chemicals, fumes or airborne particles, risk of electrical shock, sharp objects, extreme heat and/or open flame. The noise environment in the work environment is usually moderate. The employee must be able to work in a fast-paced environment. The employee may operate a golf cart, shuttle or motor vehicle.This position description identifies only the major functions and responsibilities of this job.
