Job Description:

Position Summary This position is a member of the Information Technology Department and provides technical user support within the City involving the use and application of computerized information systems and telecommunications systems, including computers, printers, telephones, pagers, radios, and voicemail; and performs a variety of routine technical tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility. Examples of Essential and General Responsibilities Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Provide technical user support involving the use and application of computerized information systems, telecommunications systems, and audio visual equipment, including resolving hardware and software issues, troubleshooting and correcting technical problems, and performing repairs.
  • Troubleshoot, repair, and perform routine preventative maintenance for computer, computer components, software, and peripheral devices.
  • Setup, support, operate, and maintain computers, telephones, audio visual systems, voicemail, pagers, mobile devices, and supporting software and services; pull and punch down network cable and diagnose/repair network connections.
  • Troubleshoot user system performance, perform user system backups during maintenance, and report other complex software malfunctions or other network related problems.
  • Respond to user inquiries in a courteous manner; provide information within area of assignment; resolve escalated complaints in an efficient and timely manner.
  • Maintain contact with user departments regarding escalated service requests or problems.
  • Ensure quality data collection and entry; coordinate with other departments to assess needs and prioritize requests and projects.
  • Estimate time, materials, and equipment required for jobs assigned.
  • Maintain work order documentation, technical schematics, and electronic information; prepare and maintain reports.
  • Assist in the evaluation and selection of applications, software packages, and technology; test and apply new software for City use; request product information from vendors.
  • Assist in training classes orienting City staff to software, hardware, peripherals, and network systems.
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as required. Minimum and Preferred Requirements Minimum requirements must be clearly demonstrated on the application to be considered, however, meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee an invitation to compete further in the selection process. (One year of work experience is the equivalent of 12 months of full-time work. "Full-time work" means at least 36 hours of work over a period of one week or 1,872 hours of work over a period of at least 12 months.) Qualifications noted as "desirable" or "preferred" are not included as part of the minimum requirements. Education may be substituted on a year for year basis with related job experience; experience is in addition to any other required experience. Experience:
    • Two (2) years of increasingly responsible computer information system support experience, including direct user support of both computer hardware and software is required.
    • Recent (within the past 2 years) hands on experience in computer information system support is preferred.
    • Experience working with and supporting broadcast, digital and emerging television architecture for live and streaming programming including equipment, video-over-IP encoders, decoders, distribution, routing, switching, control room, editing, recording, and playback is preferred.
    • Experience working in a public sector agency environment is preferred. (Public sector agency includes Federal, State, County, City Government, Law Enforcement, or other government agency.) Training:
      • High School Diploma or equivalent education is required.
      • Associates Degree, supplemented by college level course work in information systems, computer science, or a related field is preferred. License or Certificates:
        • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid California Driver License with a satisfactory driving record (a driving record may be deemed unsatisfactory for any of the following reasons: three or more moving violations or reportable accident within the last three years; conviction of driving under the influence within the last five years) is required.
        • Possession of, or ability to obtain, an Airport Security Identification Display Area (SIDA) Badge, which is approved through the Federal Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is required. Special Requirements:
          • Must be willing and able to work various shifts including late evenings and weekends.
          • Must successfully complete a pre-employment background investigation, physical and drug screen.
          • Incumbent will be enrolled in the California Department of Motor Vehicle (DMV) Pull Notice Program. The DMV Pull Notice Program provides information on the incumbents driving record and driving record status on a periodic basis to the City. This position works in an office environment with exposure to computer screens and noise. This position may require maintaining physical condition necessary for lifting up to 45 pounds; sitting for prolonged periods; talk or hear, in person and by telephone; use hands to finger, handle, feel, or operate standard computer; specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
